How to Care for Boxing Gloves in Summer: Heat, Sweat and Odour

Summer is one of the hardest periods for boxing equipment. Higher temperatures, sweat and poor ventilation inside a sports bag can leave gloves damp for longer, increase odour and accelerate wear.

The most useful habit is also the simplest: do not leave wet gloves closed inside your training bag after a session.

Why summer is harder on boxing gloves

A boxing glove has several layers that dry at different speeds. The lining may feel almost dry while moisture remains deeper inside. Heat does not automatically solve the problem: a closed car, direct sun or a radiator can expose the outer material, foam and adhesives to unnecessary stress.

Your post-training summer routine

  1. Take the gloves out of your bag as soon as possible.
  2. Open the Velcro fully and separate the gloves so air can circulate.
  3. Remove your wraps and wash or dry them separately.
  4. Wipe the outer surface according to the material and manufacturer guidance.
  5. Let the gloves air-dry naturally in a ventilated area away from direct high heat.

Places to avoid

Do not routinely leave your gloves inside a closed car in summer, in direct sunlight for hours, next to a radiator or in a damp changing-room locker. These environments can affect leather, synthetic coatings, adhesives and foam.

Use clean hand wraps

Wraps absorb a significant amount of sweat before it reaches the glove. Rotating several clean pairs is one of the easiest ways to improve hygiene and give everything enough time to dry.

Leather and synthetic gloves

Both materials need drying after use. Leather may benefit from appropriate leather care once the glove is clean and dry, while synthetic materials should be cleaned with products compatible with their finish. Avoid assuming that one cleaning product is suitable for every glove.

Before going on holiday

If you will not train for several days, do not store gloves immediately after the final session. Make sure they are fully dry first, clean the exterior, empty the training bag and store the gloves in a dry place with some airflow.

Can a deodoriser help?

A dedicated equipment deodoriser can help manage moisture and odour between sessions, but it does not replace proper drying or cleaning. Redglove's equipment deodoriser is designed as part of a normal maintenance routine.

When is it time to replace your gloves?

Odour alone is not the only sign. Inspect the striking surface, stitching, thumb connection, lining and wrist closure. If padding feels uneven or unusually hard, the lining is badly damaged or the closure no longer provides stable support, replacing the gloves may be more sensible than trying to extend their life indefinitely.
