What You Need to Start Boxing in September: Equipment and Budget
September is one of the times of year when the most people decide to put on boxing gloves for the first time. If you have just signed up for boxing, you are probably asking yourself a very simple question: what do I need to buy to get started?
Our recommendation is simple too: you do not need to buy a complete set of equipment on day one. To start well, we would prioritise two things: a good pair of boxing gloves and good hand wraps.
If you are comparing models before buying, read our guide to the best boxing gloves for beginners in 2026, where we explain what to choose based on budget, fit and type of training.
🥊 Protect your hands from your very first training session
When you start boxing, you are still learning how to close your fist correctly, position your wrist and punch with proper technique. That is why we believe hand protection should be a priority from your first class.
Being a beginner does not mean you need to train with low-quality gloves. You do not have to buy the most expensive model in the shop, but it is worth choosing gloves with good padding, proper wrist support, a comfortable fit and durable materials.
1. Good gloves from day one
One of the most common mistakes when someone starts boxing is thinking: “I’m only starting, so I’ll buy any cheap gloves and replace them later.”
We think the opposite.
Your hands are just as important in your first class as they are after years of training.
You do not need professional gloves or a big investment, but we do recommend starting with a good-quality product that helps protect your knuckles, hands and wrists during training.
At Redglove, we have spent years working with and developing boxing equipment with a very clear philosophy: to offer protection, comfort and durability from beginner ranges to our higher-end models.
What do we look for in good boxing gloves?
- Good padding: to help absorb and distribute impact.
- Knuckle protection: especially important while you are still developing your technique.
- Wrist support: the glove should stay correctly positioned during training.
- Comfortable fit: your hand should sit naturally inside the glove.
- Durable materials: able to withstand frequent training.
- Good construction: padding, stitching, closure and materials should work together as a complete system.
That is why we do not recommend choosing gloves simply because they are the cheapest. Protecting your hands starts with your very first training session.
How much do you want to invest in your first gloves?
Not everyone who starts boxing has the same budget or plans to train with the same frequency.
That is why we divide our glove selection into two very simple ranges.
This lets you go straight to the models that best match how much you want to invest.
🥊 QUALITY BEGINNER RANGE
Typical RRP below €60
This is our selection for people who want to start boxing with a good balance of quality, protection and price.
Calling these our beginner gloves does not mean they are low-quality gloves.
In this range, you will find models designed to provide a good level of padding, comfort, durability and wrist support from your first sessions.
A significant part of our beginner RG gloves is made from leather or high-quality technical vegan leather, a durable and easy-to-maintain material that allows us to offer very good performance without pushing the price up unnecessarily.
We also pay close attention to the internal construction and padding, because we believe beginners should also train with proper hand protection.
Who do we recommend this range for?
- People who are about to start boxing.
- First classes and beginner levels.
- Amateur training.
- Anyone looking for good value for money.
- Anyone who wants to start with good equipment without making a large investment.
Our philosophy:
Spend what you need to get started, but do not compromise on protecting your hands.
🥊 HIGHER-END RANGE
Typical RRP from €60
If you want to invest more from the beginning or already know that you will train frequently, you can go straight to one of our higher-end gloves.
In this selection you will find models with higher-level materials, construction, padding and finishes, designed for people looking for greater performance and durability.
And there is one important point: you do not need years of boxing experience to buy a good pair of gloves.
If your budget allows it and you know you are going to train, you can start directly with a higher-end model.
Who do we recommend this range for?
- People who train several times per week.
- Anyone who wants to invest more from the start.
- Boxers looking for better materials and finishes.
- Anyone prioritising durability and performance.
- People who already train and want to upgrade their equipment.
Important: this classification is based on the product's typical RRP. That means you may occasionally find a higher-end glove below €60 when it is on promotion.
In that case, you have the opportunity to buy a higher-end glove at a discounted price.
Beginner range or higher-end range?
There is no single right answer for everyone.
Both ranges can work for someone who is just starting. The main difference is how much you want to invest and the level of materials, construction and performance you are looking for.
If you want to start by spending what is necessary while still using good gloves, our Quality Beginner collection is an excellent starting point.
If you already know you will train regularly and want to invest more from the start, you can go straight to our Higher-End Range.
We do not want you to buy the most expensive glove. We want you to choose the right glove for you.
2. Hand wraps: low in price, huge in importance
Regardless of whether you choose beginner or higher-end gloves, good hand wraps are part of the basic protection for your hands.
Wraps help support your knuckles, wrist and hand joints before your hand goes inside the glove.
That is why we do not consider them just another accessory.
What do we look for in our RG hand wraps?
One of the most important points for us is getting the right amount of elasticity.
A wrap that is too rigid may adapt poorly to the hand. On the other hand, an overly elastic wrap can make it harder to control the tension while wrapping.
Our wraps aim for that balance: enough flexibility to adapt to the shape of the hand, while still providing firm and controlled support.
What do we want good hand wraps to offer?
- Balanced elasticity: to adapt to the hand while maintaining good support.
- Good durability: made to withstand frequent training and washing.
- Good sweat absorption: helping manage some of the moisture produced inside the glove.
- Comfort: important during long training sessions.
- Hand and wrist support: for a complete and stable wrap.
- Secure fastening: to keep the wrap correctly positioned during training.
Good hand wraps also help absorb some of the sweat before it reaches the inside of the gloves.
This can help keep your gloves in better condition, although we always recommend airing your gloves after every training session and washing your wraps frequently.
🥊 Our basic combination for getting started
If you are putting together your first boxing kit, we do not think you need to buy a large number of products.
Our priority would be:
- Choose good gloves for your budget.
- Pair them with good hand wraps.
Later, as your training progresses and based on your coach's advice, you can add the rest of the equipment you actually need.
Protect your hands first. Expand your kit later.
How much does it cost to start boxing?
You can easily adapt your first set of equipment to your budget.
| Option | Typical glove RRP | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Quality beginner range | Below €60 | I want good gloves while keeping my budget under control |
| Higher-end range | From €60 | I want to invest more in materials, construction and performance |
*The classification is based on the typical RRP. Final prices may vary because of temporary offers and promotions.
What glove weight do I need to start?
This is one of the questions we receive most often.
We do not recommend choosing glove ounces based only on your body weight. You should also consider the type of training, your experience and the instructions of your coach or gym.
Bag work, technique, general training and sparring can all have different requirements.
If you are deciding between 10, 12, 14 or 16 oz, ask us before buying.
We will help you choose an appropriate glove weight for the type of training you are going to do.

What can you buy later?
When you are starting, you do not need to buy every piece of boxing equipment at once.

This lets you invest first where we believe it makes the most sense: properly protecting your hands.
