Jack Broughton: Seven Rules and the Early Gloves That Changed Boxing
Long before modern boxing commissions, timed rounds and standardised gloves, the sport was shaped by fighters who had to create rules for an activity that was still evolving. One of the most important was Jack Broughton, an 18th-century English champion whose name is linked both to early boxing rules and to padded training gloves.
Who was Jack Broughton?
Broughton became one of the best-known prize fighters of his era and later ran a boxing amphitheatre in London. Bare-knuckle contests at the time could be extremely long and dangerous, with far fewer agreed restrictions than modern boxing.
The rules associated with Broughton
In 1743, Broughton published a short set of rules intended to bring more order to prize fighting. They addressed how a round ended after a knockdown, how long a fighter had to return to the contest area and some actions that were not permitted.
These were not modern boxing rules, but they were an important step in the gradual process that later led to more formal regulation.
Why padded gloves matter in the story
Broughton is also associated with padded gloves known as “mufflers”, used for training and instruction rather than the bare-knuckle prize fights themselves. The idea seems obvious today, but separating training equipment from competition conditions was a meaningful development.
